The Omicron variant; also known as B.1.1.529, was first detected in South Africa. There is still a lot of research undergoing, but WHO (World Health Organisation) has classified it as the most potent strain.

The new variant has been detected in Botswana, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Australia confirmed its two first cases in Sydney among travelers.

Why Is This Variant the Worst?

The Omicron virus has some traits that have never been seen before in the last two years. Based on scientists, it has over 30 mutations that could help it avoid our body’s defenses. That is twice the mutations of the current worst variant — Delta.

Based on the patterns of transmission, the concerns are it might be even more transmissible as well as a higher risk of reinfection for people who already had COVID.

That is why there have been travel restrictions to all African nations in many countries. Japan, Hong Kong, Morocco, Europe, Israel, Australia, and many others have imposed travel bans.

Unfortunately, the variant has made its way in Belgium, Hong Kong, and Israel.
